We gathered in Chicago Jan. 29 on a crisp winter evening to celebrate Tiffany’s legacy and support our mission of empowering women and underrepresented leaders in media. The gathering was filled with warmth, thoughtful conversation, and generosity from everyone who came out despite the cold.
As Treasurer of the Tiffany Shackelford Foundation, I was honored to co-host the evening at the home of my business partner, Melissa Harris. Thanks to Melissa and her mother, Cheryl Harris, for their wonderful hospitality.
A highlight of the night was my conversation with Melissa Bell, CEO of Chicago Public Media, which is brought to life by the work of two independent newsrooms: WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times. Melissa shared heartfelt memories of Tiffany, not just as a visionary in the media and tech worlds, but as a true connector who brought people together with joy and purpose. (See my LinkedIn post.)
The conversation also turned to one of the most pressing issues facing journalism today: sustainability. Melissa offered insights into how local news organizations like those she leads are building diversified revenue models to support quality reporting. These approaches reminded us that strong journalism thrives when communities invest in it.
Fueling Futures: Shackelford Shines Stipends
The funds raised at the event directly support Shackelford Shines stipends, the small but powerful grants designed to help emerging leaders attend conferences, training, and leadership development opportunities. These stipends reflect Tiffany’s spirit of mentorship and her belief that access to connection and professional growth can change the trajectory of a career.
The Tiffany Shackelford Foundation awards up to 10 Shackelford Shines stipends each year, helping individuals offset travel and registration costs so they can build their skills and networks. The program prioritizes support for women and underrepresented groups working at the intersection of journalism and innovation. Apply here.
Thank You for Makimg This Work Possible
Heartfelt thanks go to everyone who contributed — hosts, colleagues, donors, and attendees alike. Your participation not only fuels these important opportunities for future leaders but also keeps alive Tiffany’s belief in community, empowerment, and radical care.
Together, we’re honoring Tiffany’s legacy by helping more brilliant, passionate storytellers shine.
